Social Networking, Going Beyond the Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter
Social media and discussions about social networking are peppering every meme on the Web. This is bringing everyone into the game–big and small business. Does that mean all of the opportunity is gone? No. The real truth most people are completely off the mark.
Getting a MySpace, Facebook, or Twitter account is not social networking. Social networking requires participation and valuable contribution to the community. These are some of the secrets to getting real impact from your social network.
Listening
Getting into the conversation starts with listening to your community. Take some time to research your target audience–people you want in your community. These are my favorite approaches:
* Use Google’s Blog Search to find blogs and commentary associated with your business
* Set-up Google alerts to email you tips on new content related to your marketplace
* Use Twitter Search to monitor community related conversation in real-time
Not only will listening tune you into your target audience–it will reveal opportunity.
Participating
Note, the first word is social networking is “social.” That means that people expect connections in their network to participate. They are looking for a conversation. Getting the most out of your social networking means giving your community what they want. These are techniques I use:
* Ask questions. Want a big crowd? Ask for advice.
* Answer questions. This demonstrates expertise and adds value.
* Link to great resources. Linking gives to the community and builds goodwill.
* Share good content. I good proportion you should share your own content.
Participating shows a genuine interest in the community, building your credibility and reputation–important to powering a successful social network.
Audience Building
Once engaged in your social network, it is time to build your own audience. Your audience should be folks that follow you and are influenced by you.
Be the leader in your social community and you will maximize your return. This of course requires trust and reputation. Each is built over time and based mainly on useful and valuable participation.
Join the conversation, help people, and be willing to learn and your audience will grow. However, one powerful suggestions–focus on conversations and interactions that have keyword clues. This will help attract an appropriate audience. Also, every social network has a search tool–this is how most audiences get built, like websites it takes a little smart SEO.
Mobilizing
As you build your audience don’t be shy to get them doing something. Folks love to support a cause or be a part of a community effort. Most will happily get involved. So, start mobilizing your audience early. This creates a real powerhouse as your audience grows–giving you the opportunity to tackle really big campaigns.
Are you now convinced that social networking is more than a seizure inducing MySpace page, a college reunion FaceBook network, or a java fueled blasting of what your ate for dinner? Social networking is about–listening, participating, and mobilizing. Get yours started today.

Does anyone else feel a little fed up with society?
I despise the word ‘hipster’, so please don’t get me wrong – I’m not one of those people. I’m not all "F the mainstream and F you too". But I have a bit of concern about today’s age and no one seems to agree with me.
People are so. Bloody. Obsessive. Between the social networks (facebook, twitter etc.) and cell phone obsessions, I am far beyond annoyed with the contemporary trends. The social media obsession has gotten so out of control that my friends start flipping the hell out whenever they’re cellphones die. They stick their big noses in their blackberry screens all day – several times, I’ve been talking to a friend and in the middle of the conversation, they take their phone out. "Oh, sorry, it’s important. I’m waiting for my girlfriend/boyfriend to text me back."
I understand that I probably sound a little complain-y. And I’m actually horribly sorry to those of you who do have cell phones and use them in moderation. But it isn’t just teenagers who are obsessed – both of my parents have 700 hundred dollar phones which they spend about 200 dollars a month on. When they aren’t at work, they are on their fat asses, playing with their cellphones. The out of control part is that we don’t even have a telephone in our house anymore.
I hardly want to talk about Facebook. I’m just appalled that whenever I talk to someone they go, "What’s your facebook addy?" Are you seriously so obsessed that you assume everyone has an account on that silly website? Silly is an understatement. It’s just stupid. You upload a bunch of pictures of yourself, you bitch about how much your life sucks, and you drone on about the great party you went to last night. It’s funny, because everyone is so harsh toward Myspace ("myspace is gay" as some of you would put it) and Facebook is literally the exact same kind of website.
I don’t know. I feel obnoxious and teenagerish ranting about this, but I really had to get it out there. As I said, I don’t have Facebook or a cell phone, and I’m very happy with my life. I have a job, a 5.0 GPA, volunteer regularly and have lots of time for hobbies – stupid ones, my friends would say. I think painting is a lovely hobby, but maybe that’s just me.
Anyways, what’s your word on the subject? I appreciate you being respectful of everyone’s opinions.
Oops. I contradicted myself in the first paragraph there. I suppose I *am* all "F the mainstream". haha.
Thanks for your opinion, prisoner. I genuinely haven’t brought this up for the sake of complaining. I’d like to agree with you when you say that "society sucks and we all know it", but I think you’re quite off, my friend. If everyone was aware of it, I’m sure half the people on the planet wouldn’t be ‘so stupid it’s scary.’
Ummmm…. I love my cellphone myspace is lame now and your old!! Have some fun you boob

I’m sick of people like you.. contemptuous and angry. Society sucks, and we all know it. Why complain? Why brag about how much better you think you are? We’re all equally stupid, and just equal, period. It’s scary, honestly.. but what’s the point of complaining to the internet?

People have always had some sort of trend they do. But yea today people are a lot more into violent inappropriate stuff, everyones trying to act oh so cool, with there stupid backwards hats and baggy pants and there phones. Little kids have phones! I know a 7 year old who does…. It’s getting crazy in today’s society. Everyone is obsessed with Facebook. It’s annoying. Oh and another thing that is really stupid in today’s "trends" is that a lot of people try to act random! Ugh this one girl talks with a weird voice because she thinks that’s cool I guess. She talks in a deeper weird voice and says "omg!" and "ikr" and all the obsessed people over Justin beiber are really weird, they only like him because he is famous! He was your average kid before, no girl who likes him now would ever want to go out with him then. People now a days only do certin things because everyone else is. Can’t anyone ever just be themselves for once!?
Facebook is stupid, I agree I don’t even want to talk about it! Ugh. All people do is post random crap that they think will get them attention. Like they post quotes and "haha guess what I did today" crap. Or "just went to the movies with my BFF yay!" nobody cares about that!
Also lots of people are obsessed with texting.
Society gets weirder and weirder every year!
Oh well, hope i helped answer your question some how.

I think it is all a lot of petty distractions to keep our attention away from the fact that our civilised societies are all going down the toilet, and the nasty people behind it are the ones in control of the distractions so it all works out very well for them.
